Hotel Farah and Kurdish Heritage Alive in Sulaymaniyah

Farah is the oldest hotel in Sulaymaniyah. Situated in Dargazen Bazrgani district, this ancient hotel was built by Haj Tawfiq Mahmoud Agha and Said Marif between 1932 and 1934.

The unique design of Hotel Farah was the work of Mardan Asta while Izzat Imael Ikhwani Al Karkuki designed additional details including the balcony, the ceilings and the corners of the roof.

In 2006, this 84 year old building was purchased by the [Sulaimaniyah] City Museum and is now owned by the Directorate of Antiquities of Sulaimaniyah.

The renovation of the heritage building was started in 2013 and completed in 2015 by Sulaymaniyah Directorate.

The first floor of the building is occupied by shops mainly selling Kurdish folk clothes and household property along with old weapons and ammunition.

The second floor of the hotel has now become the headquarters of the Kurdish Cultural Revival Organization.

It is worth mentioning that Hotel Farah is registered with UNESCO World Heritage Centre as a heritage building.
